Why the Brand Matters
A tyre isn't just a rubber ring. It's the only thing connecting your car to the road — handling, braking, cornering, wet grip, noise, comfort, and fuel efficiency are all determined by those four patches of rubber. The difference between a premium tyre and a cheap unknown brand is measurable and significant, especially in wet conditions and emergency braking.
That said, you don't always need the most expensive tyre. Budget brands have improved enormously in recent years, and there's a "sweet spot" at mid-range that gives excellent performance without breaking the bank. Here's our honest breakdown of what we stock and when we recommend each tier.
Premium Brands — The Best in the Business
Michelin
Consistently top-rated in independent tests. Michelin tyres excel in wet grip, longevity, and fuel efficiency. Their Primacy and Pilot Sport ranges are class leaders. They're not cheap — but they last significantly longer than cheaper alternatives, often making them better value per mile.
Best for: Drivers who want the best grip and longest life. Premium vehicles. Motorway commuters.
Continental
German engineering applied to rubber. Continental consistently scores highest in wet braking tests — their PremiumContact and SportContact ranges are exceptional. Strong all-round performers with particularly impressive safety margins.
Best for: Safety-conscious drivers. Wet weather performance. European vehicles.
Pirelli
The choice of performance car manufacturers — Pirelli supplies original equipment to Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW M, and others. Their P Zero range is the benchmark for high-performance road tyres. Excellent dry grip and steering feel.
Best for: Sports cars. Performance driving. Drivers who prioritise handling.
Bridgestone
Japan's largest tyre manufacturer and one of the most consistent performers in independent testing. Their Turanza range is excellent for comfort and longevity, while the Potenza line targets performance drivers. Reliable across the board.
Best for: Reliable all-rounders. Japanese and Korean vehicles. Long-distance drivers.
Mid-Range — The Sweet Spot
Goodyear
Strong heritage and consistently good performance. Goodyear's EfficientGrip and Eagle ranges offer excellent wet weather grip at a more accessible price point than Michelin or Continental. Good longevity and widely available in most sizes.
Dunlop
Owned by Goodyear but with its own distinct character. Dunlop's Sport BluResponse is a popular choice for everyday driving — good grip, reasonable wear rate, and competitive pricing. A solid middle-ground option.
Hankook & Kumho
Korean manufacturers that have improved dramatically. Hankook now supplies original equipment to BMW and Mercedes, which tells you all you need to know about where they sit quality-wise. Excellent value — premium-level performance at mid-range prices.
Budget — When Value Matters
Not everyone needs premium tyres. If you're running an older car, have a short commute, or simply need a roadworthy tyre fitted fast, quality budget brands are a sensible choice. We stock several reputable budget options that meet all safety standards and perform perfectly well for normal driving.
A word of caution: We don't stock the cheapest of the cheap — the ultra-budget brands with names nobody recognises. Independent testing consistently shows some budget tyres have dramatically worse wet braking than mid-range options. The difference can be multiple car lengths at motorway speed. That's not a saving worth making.

- Premium vehicle, motorway commute, performance driving: Michelin, Continental, or Pirelli
- Everyday family car, mixed driving: Goodyear, Hankook, or Dunlop — great performance at a fair price
- Older vehicle, short distances, budget priority: Quality budget brand — safe, roadworthy, and significantly cheaper
- Emergency callout, need anything NOW: We'll fit the best available tyre we have for your vehicle — you can always upgrade later
The important thing in an emergency is getting you back on the road safely. Whatever brand we fit, it'll be roadworthy, properly balanced, and torque-finished. If you want to upgrade to a specific brand later, we can do a planned visit with that exact tyre loaded on the van.
