1. Sidewall Bulges or Blisters
A bulge on the sidewall of your tyre is the most dangerous warning sign on this list. It means the internal structure of the tyre has been compromised — usually from hitting a pothole or kerb at speed. The rubber is literally bulging outward because the reinforcing cords inside are broken.

2. Vibration Through the Steering Wheel
Some vibration on rough roads is normal. Persistent vibration through the steering wheel at speed — especially between 50-70mph — is not. It usually indicates a wheel balance issue, but it can also signal tyre damage, a flat spot from emergency braking, or internal structural failure.

3. Cracking or Weathering on the Sidewall
Small cracks appearing in the sidewall rubber is a sign of age and UV degradation. Tyre rubber degrades over time even if the tread looks fine — especially if the vehicle is parked outside. Most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after 5-6 years regardless of tread depth.
Cracking weakens the tyre structure and increases the risk of sudden failure. If your tyre sidewalls look dry, cracked, or "crazed" — they need replacing. Don't wait for them to fail at 70mph.
4. Uneven Tread Wear
Your tyres should wear evenly across the full width of the tread. If they're wearing more on one side, in the centre, or on the edges, something is wrong:
- Centre wear: Tyres are over-inflated
- Edge wear: Tyres are under-inflated
- One-sided wear: Wheel alignment is off
- Cupping/scalloping: Suspension issue or wheel balance problem
Uneven wear means your tyres are wearing out faster than they should, and your car's handling and braking are compromised. Check your pressures, get your alignment checked, and replace any tyres showing severe uneven wear.
5. Tyre Pressure Warning Light (TPMS)
If the orange tyre pressure light appears on your dashboard, do not ignore it. It means at least one tyre is significantly below the recommended pressure. Driving on under-inflated tyres increases fuel consumption, wears tyres unevenly, and — critically — increases the risk of a blowout.
Check your pressures as soon as possible. If the light stays on after inflating to the correct pressure, you may have a slow puncture or a faulty TPMS sensor. Our mobile TPMS service can diagnose and fix it.
6. Tread Depth Below 3mm
The UK legal minimum is 1.6mm, but tyre performance drops significantly below 3mm — especially in wet conditions. Braking distances increase dramatically: a car with 1.6mm tread takes 44% longer to stop in the wet than one with 3mm.
Check your tread depth with a 20p coin — insert it into the main tread grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread is at or below 1.6mm and the tyre is illegal. Each illegal tyre carries a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points. Four illegal tyres = £10,000 and 12 points = automatic ban.
7. Slow Pressure Loss
If you're topping up the same tyre every few days or weeks, you have a slow puncture. It might be a tiny nail, a damaged valve, or a bead seal issue. Whatever the cause, it's not going to fix itself — and repeatedly running a tyre at low pressure causes internal damage that can lead to sudden failure later.
